The governor of Benue State, Dr George Akume, 52, is a former civil servant, now serving his second term in office. Elected on the ticket of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (POP), he inherited a rich legacy of political activism from his late father, Pa Akume Dajo, who was one of the leaders of the United Middle Belt Congress (UMBC), a party that championed the rights of minorities in the old Northern Region.
