Anesthesia Provider Pays $12.1 Million for Airway Obstruction

Case Report: A 14-yearold boy broke his arm playing football. He had a full stomach, so the required operation was delayed until the next morning when it was successfully preformed under general anesthesia. In the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) the anesthesia provider "briefly evaluated" the boy by allegedly wiggling "the boy's toe and received a response." The boy had an airway obstruction in the PACU and sustained a severe hypoxic-ischemic injury before the code was called. Today he is aware of surroundings, cannot communicate, and will require 24-hour care the rest of his life.
