Stephen Long, a famed explorer

Best remembered for service on the American frontier, Colonel Stephen Harriman Long also contributed almost 50 years of active service to the United States Army Corps of Topographical Engineers.

Born in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, in 1784, Long was a Dartmouth College graduate and teacher when he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on December 12, 1814. On April 29, 1816, following two years teaching at the U.S. Military Academy, he was transferred to field service with the Topographical Engineers with the rank of brevet major.
