In May 2004, Rev. Alice C. Parker traveled to Washington, D.C. For once in her decades-long career of public service, the purpose of her trip was not to offer assistance to those in need. Instead, she was going as a Jefferson Awards' nominee. The Jefferson Awards are presented by the American Institute for Public Service, a public foundation founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard to establish the equivalent of a Nobel Prize for public and community service.
