The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is America's most prestigious honorary society. The academy was established in 1779. This was more than 80 years prior to Emancipation. From the time of its founding, and for at least a century afterwards, no blacks were admitted as fellows. Today, 226 years later, it appears that of the academy's 4,000 fellows, 67, or about 1.7 percent, are black.
