AT THE 1899 meeting of the Geological section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, the presidential address was delivered by the eminent geologist Sir Archibald Geike. His paper (1905) was entitled "Geological Time." He noted with some alarm the widely differing views among geologists, paleontologists, and the new physicists as to the length of geologic time, the rates of erosion, and the gradual increase in complexity of organisms.
