Fort Myers Growing Up

When it comes to Florida, most New Yorkers are more familiar with the so-called "sixth borough."

That would be the state's southeast coast, notably the stretch of condominiums, waterfront resorts and beaches from West Palm Beach down to Miami. It's a comforting mix of transplanted bagel shops and Italian restaurants where New Yorkers have historically vacationed and retired.

That familiarity is what can make a visit to the "other coast" -- the Gulf Coast, a 2½-hour drive west of Fort Lauderdale -- so refreshing.
