New CMV treatments finally arriving for HIV patients

Treatment for cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in HIV patients is finally getting easier. In October, the Food & Drug Administration expanded the indication for oral ganciclovir (Cytovene, Roche Bioscience) to include prevention of CMV, including CMV retinitis, in advanced AIDS patients. The next new approval, an intraocular ganciclovir insert, is expected by the second quarter of this year.
