Christopher Follett on the Danish composer, conductor and teacher who spent time in Paris with Berlioz and Baltimore with the Orchestra

Interest in Denmark's 19th-century Golden Age is sparking a well deserved revival in the music of Asger Hamerik, who was in his lifetime the best known Danish composer and musician outside his own country.

Hamerik was born in Frederiksberg, near Copenhagen, on 8 April 1843 and died in the same town on 13 July 1923 at the age of 80, after a lifetime of globe trotting.

His father, the Rev Frederik Hammerich, was Professor of Church History at Copenhagen ...
