Fort Monmouth loses battle to stay open

Despite an intense and concerted effort on the part of acting Governor Richard J. Codey, the state's leading congressional representatives, and the Port Authority, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) recently recommended the closure of Fort Monmouth in the year 2011. President Bush is expected to accept the commission's recommendations, which will become final this month unless both houses of Congress vote to reject the plan, a possibility that appears unlikely to happen.
