The Relationship Between Fertility, Rump Angle, and Selected Type Information in Holstein-Friesian Cows
|
ABSTRACT
Some dairy cattle breeders believe that dairy cows with high pin bones will have poorer fertility. The aim of this study was to examine this claim by investigating the relationships, both genetic and phenotypic, between fertility, rump angle, and other selected type traits in first-lactation Holstein-Friesians. Results showed an unfavorable genetic correlation (-0.16) between calving interval and rump angle, suggesting that animals with high pin bones would have a longer calvi...

Indirect prediction of herd life in Guernsey dairy cattle
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Production and type data were used to investigate the relationships of these traits with herd life data in US Guernsey cows that calved from 1985 through 1990. Two definitions of herd life were used: actual days from birth to disposal (true herd life) and herd life adjusted for milk

Relationship Between Type Traits and Longevity in Canadian Jerseys and Ayrshires Using a Weibull Proportional Hazards Model
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to use a Weibull proportional hazards model to explore the impact of type traits on the functional survival of Canadian Jersey and Ayrshire cows. The data set consisted of 49,791 registered Jersey cows from 900 herds calving from 1985 to 2003. The corresponding

Genetic parameters and responses of linear type, yield traits, and somatic cell scores to divergent selection for predicted transmitting ability for type in Holsteins
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT The objective was to examine the direct and correlated responses of linear type, yield traits, and somatic cell scores (SCS) to divergent selection for predicted transmitting ability for type (PTAT) in Holsteins, while maintaining selection for yield traits across lines. For four

Heritabilities and Genetic Correlations of Body Condition Score and Calving Interval with Yield, Somatic Cell Score, and Linear Type Traits in Brown Swiss Cattle
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters for body condition score (BCS), calving interval (CI), somatic cell score (SCS), yield, and linear type traits for the Italian Brown Swiss cattle population. A total of 32,359 records of first-parity lactating cows were collected from 2002 to

Genetic relationships between lifetime profit and type trails in Spanish Holstein cows
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Genetic parameters and relationships were estimated for profit and type traits for Spanish Holstein cows. In this study, 46,316 cows with official production and type data from Navarra and Basque autonomous regions of Spain were used to calculate profit per cow and year of productive life.

Body Trait Profiles in Holstein-Friesians Modeled Using Random Regression
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Legendre polynomial and cubic spline functions were used in random regression models to model the change in body traits over the course of the first lactation for daughters of 954 sires. Both functions estimated similar genetic variances for d 50 to 250 across lactation for the majority of

The Relationship Between Body Energy Traits and Production and Fitness Traits in First-Lactation Dairy Cows
Journal of Dairy Science
; ABSTRACT Daily breeding values for various body energy traits were estimated from nationally recorded linear type information using random regression techniques. These traits included predicted live weight, growth rate (GR), and several measures of body energy during first lactation. The
