Previously, in an effort to better understand the male contribution to fertilization, we completed a maize (Zea mays) sperm expressed sequence tag project. Here, we used this resource to identify promoters that would direct gene expression in sperm cells. We used reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to identify probable sperm-specific transcripts in maize and then identified their best sequence matches in the Arabidopsis (Ambidopsis thaliana) genome. We tested five different Arabid...

Genetic control of male germ unit organization in Arabidopsis
Plant Physiology
; Genetic Control of Male Germ Unit Organization in Arabidopsis1 In flowering plants, the vegetative nucleus and the two sperm cells are proposed to form a functional assemblage, the male germ unit (MGU). Here, we describe the developmental pathway of MGU assembly in Arabidopsis and report two

The Ubiquitin-Specific Protease Subfamily UBP3/UBP4 Is Essential for Pollen Development and Transmission in Arabidopsis1[W][OA]
Plant Physiology
; Deubiquitinating enzymes are essential to the ubiquitin (Ub)/26S proteasome system where they release Ub monomers from the primary translation products of poly-Ub and Ub extension genes, recycle Ubs from polyubiquitinated proteins, and reverse the effects of ubiquitination by releasing bound Ubs

SPERM RESEARCH GIVES STERILE MICE FERTILITY
The Washington Post
; Researchers have transferred immature sperm cells into sterile male mice, rendering them fertile. The feat promises to speed scientists' understanding of the complex process by which sperm cells mature in the testes, perhaps leading to treatment for some types of male sterility. The work also could

Sperm cells created in lab.(News)
Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England)
; Today researchers at Newcastle's Centre for Life announced another medical first after using human bone marrow to create sperm cells. It is hoped the achievement, thanks to the Centre's Prof Karim Nayernia, will help experts understand more about how sperm cells are created and could give baby hope

Control of Male Gametophyte Development
Plant Cell
; INTRODUCTION In a previous review of male gametophyte development (McCormick, 1993), it was noted that the two areas posed by Mascarenhas (1975) as fruitful areas for future research were the following. What are the differences in the two cytoplasms that determine the different cell fates of the

The prospect of all-female conception
Belfast Telegraph
; Scientists are seeking ethical permission to produce synthetic sperm cells from a woman's bone marrow tissue after showing that it possible to produce rudimentary sperm cells from male bone-marrow tissue. The researchers said they had already produced early sperm cells from bone-marrow tissue taken
