Photoreactivation in Paramecium tetraurelia under Conditions of Various Degrees of Ozone Layer Depletion¶
|
ABSTRACT
Photoreactivation (PR) is an efficient survival mechanism that helps protect cells against the harmful effects of solar-ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The PR mechanism involves photolyase, just one enzyme, and can repair DNA damage, such as cyclobutane-pyrimidine dimers (CPD) induced by near-UV/blue light, a component of sunlight. Although the balance of near-UV/blue light and far-UV light reaching the Earth's surface could be altered by the atmospheric ozone layer's depletion, e...

The antiapoptotic effect of low-dose UVB irradiation in NIH3T3 cells involves caspase inhibition
Photochemistry and Photobiology
; The Antiapoptotic Effect of Low-dose UVB Irradiation in NIH3T3 Cells Involves Caspase Inhibition para ABSTRACT UVB irradiation is a well-known apoptosis induction factor. However, we have previously found that low doses of UVB irradiation inhibited apoptosis induced by both serum starvation and

Inhibitory Effects of Mizolastine on Ultraviolet B-Induced Leukotriene B4 Production and 5-Lipoxygenase Expression in Normal Human Dermal Fibroblasts In Vitro
Photochemistry and Photobiology
; ABSTRACT Ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation exerts hazardous effects such as acute photodamage, skin cancer and photoaging. In this study we evaluated the protective effects of a nonsedative histamine H1-receptor antagonist, mizolastine, on UVB-exposed skin dermal fibroblasts. Therefore, primary human

Akt1-mediated Intracellular Oxidation after UVB Irradiation Suppresses Apoptotic Cell Death Induced by Cell Detachment and Serum Starvation
Photochemistry and Photobiology
; ABSTRACT Apoptosis is an important cell death system that deletes damaged and mutated cells to prevent cancer. We have previously reported that a certain dose of UVB irradiation inhibited the apoptosis induced by serum starvation and cell detachment, leading to cell transformation. This

Ovariectomy acceleraties photoaging of rat skin
Photochemistry and Photobiology
; ABSTRACT We have previously reported the formation of wrinkles, a decrease in skin elasticity and a loss in the linearity of dermal elastic fibers in rat hind limb skin irradiated with ultraviolet radiation in wavelength ranging 290-320 nm (UVB) at a suberythemal dose for 6 weeks. Estrogens are

Ultraviolet irradiation (UVB) interrupts calcium cell signaling in lens epithelial cells
Photochemistry and Photobiology
; ABSTRACT A preliminary study was undertaken to establish whether low-dose UV irradiation (UVB) affects calcium cell signaling in rabbit lens epithelia. In a suspension of lens epithelial cells (line NN1003A), changes in intracellular Ca^sup 2+^ were measured by Fura-2 fluorescence in response to

P53-dependent UVB responsiveness of human keratinocytes can be altered by cultivation on cell cycle-arrested dermal fibroblasts
Photochemistry and Photobiology
; ABSTRACT In cultured human keratinocytes, the tumor suppressor p53 acts as a control element in the protective response to UVB radiation and is affected by a variety of factors linked to cellular adhesion and differentiation. Because keratinocytes within the epidermis are not a homogeneous
