The '60s and '70s was an era of great social change. And nowhere was it more evident than on college campuses where scholarly pursuits meshed perfectly with the highly charged issues of the day. Indeed, campuses were fertile grounds for activism and MarÃa JimÃ©nez, who comes from a long line of activists, was in her element.

A 1974 graduate of the University of Houston, JimÃ©nez returned to her alma mater to teach a spring semester course on advocacy offered through the Center for Mexican-American Studies, a program she helped create. The course covered the history of Latino activism, ...
