The regulation of water uptake of germinating tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) seeds was studied spatially and temporally by in vivo ^sup 1^H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) microimaging and ^sup 1^H-magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy. These non-destructive state-of-the-art methods showed that water distribution in the water uptake phases II and III is inhomogeneous. The micropylar seed end is the major entry point of water. The micropylar endosperm and the radicle show the highest hydration. ...

TDSC technique may be useful in study of hydration in degradable polymers.
Biomedical Materials ; The technique of thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TDSC) to investigate water uptake in degradable biomedical polymers may prove useful in promoting the understanding of the mechanisms of hydration and subsequent hydrolytic degradation in these biomaterials, claim scientists in both the
Model estimates of water transport coefficient. (Effects of Coating on Seed Imbibition, part 1)
Crop Science ; To improve seed conservation during storage and to protect young seedlings from diseases and pests, chemical treatments have been used for a long time. In the past 20 yr, the development of seed coatings and new active ingredients have significantly improved such treatments. Seed coatings act as

Spatial distribution of roots and water uptake of maize (Zea mays L.) as affected by soil structure. (Crop Physiology & Metabolism).(Abstract)
Crop Science ; THE ROLE THAT SOIL STRUCTURAL STATUS PLAYS in modulating plant water uptake has been studied mainly in relation to the influence of tillage on plant water relations. Soil compaction is believed to cause a reduction in water uptake due to limited penetration of roots (Hamblin, 1985). Also, the
Water absorption characteristics of modified hydroxyapatite bone cements
Biomedical Materials ; The introduction of the hydroxyapatite (HA) reduced the water uptake of the bone cement, with a further decrease if the HA filler was surface treated with a silane coupling agent. However, the system comprising the silicated silanated HA-filled cement produced a large uptake of water, with

Paint & Coatings Industry ; The formulation of wood coatings based on totally VOC-free materials is difficult. When looking for high blocking resistance, we expect a hard binder.
