Acute allograft (transplanted organ) rejection, infection, and drug toxicity are the primary barriers to long-term allograft survival. Introduction of new and selective immunosuppressants has significantly improved both short- and long-term allograft survivals. Enhancement of surgical technique, improvement of organ preservation, and understanding the immunobiology of acute rejection have led the field of transplantation from an experimental treatment model to standard practice of care in patients with end-stage organ (kidney, liver, heart) disease.
