ABSTRACT

The tropical cyclone activity for 2003 in the eastern North Pacific hurricane basin is summarized. Activity during 2003 was slightly below normal. Sixteen tropical storms developed, seven of which became hurricanes. However, there were no major hurricanes in the basin for the first time since 1977. The first hurricane did not form until 24 August, the latest observed first hurricane at least since reliable satellite observations began in 1966. Five tropical cyclones made landf...

Decadal variability in the North Pacific: The eastern North Pacific mode*
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT Decadal variability in the North Pacific is studied in a series of coupled global ocean-atmosphere simulations using coupled modeling surgery-a set of modeling approaches that can be used to identify the origins and causes of a specific variability mode in the coupled climate system. Both
Eastern North Pacific Hurricane Season of 2005
Monthly Weather Review ; ABSTRACT The 2005 eastern North Pacific hurricane season is summarized, the individual tropical cyclones are described, and official track and intensity forecasts are verified and evaluated. The season's overall activity was, by most measures, below average. While a near-average 15 tropical storms
Eastern north Pacific hurricane season of 1994
Monthly Weather Review ; ABSTRACT An account of the 1994 hurricane season in the eastern North Pacific Ocean is given. The numbers of hurricanes and tropical storms were near normal, but the activity tended to occur farther to the west in the basin than usual. Hurricane Rosa was the only system of the season to make
Eastern North Pacific hurricane season of 2001
Monthly Weather Review ; ANNUAL SUMMARY ABSTRACT The 2001 eastern North Pacific hurricane season is reviewed. It was a near-average season in terms of the number of systems, with 15 named tropical cyclones of which 8 became hurricanes. One tropical cyclone made landfall in Mexico and two reached category 3 or higher on the
Eastern North Pacific hurricane season of 1996
Monthly Weather Review ; ABSTRACT The National Hurricane Center (a component of the Tropical Prediction Center) tracked nine tropical storms, five of which became hurricanes, during the 1996 eastern North Pacific hurricane season. Five tropical storms or hurricanes made landfall in Mexico. An overview of the 1996 hurricane
Eastern North Pacific Hurricane Season of 2004
Monthly Weather Review ; ABSTRACT The 2004 eastern North Pacific hurricane season is reviewed. It was a below-average season in terms of number of systems and landfalls. There were 12 named tropical cyclones, of which 8 became hurricanes. None of the tropical storms or hurricanes made landfall, and there were no reports of
A New Eastern North Pacific Smoothhound Shark (Genus Mustelus, Family Triakidae) from the Gulf of California
Copeia ; A new Smoothhound shark, Mustelus hacat, is described from the eastern North Pacific. Four species of the genus Mustelus had been previously recognized in this area: M. californicus, M. henlei, M. lunulatus, and M. dorsalis. Mustelus hacat is described on the basis of 36 specimens caught in the
Bayesian Multiple Changepoint Analysis of Hurricane Activity in the Eastern North Pacific: A Markov Chain Monte Carlo Approach
Journal of Climate ; ABSTRACT A Bayesian framework is developed to detect multiple abrupt shifts in a time series of the annual major hurricanes counts. The hurricane counts are modeled by a Poisson process where the Poisson intensity (i.e., hurricane rate) is codified by a gamma distribution. Here, a triple hypothesis
The effects of climatological and persistence variables on the intensities of tropical cyclones over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean
Weather and Forecasting ; ABSTRACT The effects of 10 climatological and persistence variables (latitude, maximum wind speed, 12-h change of maximum wind speed, longitude, distance to land, Julian date, sea surface temperature, speed of movement, zonal component of motion, and meridional component of motion) on changes of
Eastern North Pacific hurricane season of 2002
Monthly Weather Review ; ABSTRACT The 2002 eastern North Pacific hurricane season is summarized and the year's tropical cyclones are described. The season featured 12 named tropical storms, of which 6 became hurricanes. Five of the six hurricanes reached an intensity of 100 kt or higher. There were two landfalling
