The nuclear genome of the moss Physcomitrella patens contains two genes encoding phage-type RNA polymerases (PpRPOT1 and PpRPOT2). Each of the PpRPOT1 and PpRPOT2 transcripts possesses two in-frame AUG codons at the 5' terminus that could act as a translational initiation site. Observation of transient and stable Physcomitrella transformants expressing the 5' terminus of each PpRPOT cDNA fused with the green fluorescent protein gene suggested that both PpRPOT1 and PpRPOT2 are not translated f...

Mitochondria and cancer.
Townsend Letter: The Examiner of Alternative Medicine
; Introduction Since the beginning of this century, new avenues in the field of cancer have been emerging, and now, after decades of failure in understanding and curing cancer, the dogma that a functioning cell is subordinate only to its DNA is in decline. Biologists are no longer convinced that the

Translational Regulation via 5' mRNA Leader Sequences Revealed by Mutational Analysis of the Arabidopsis Translation Initiation Factor Subunit eIF3h
Plant Cell
; Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF3) consists of core subunits that are conserved from yeast to man as well as less conserved, noncore, subunits with potential regulatory roles. Whereas core subunits tend to be indispensable for cell growth, the roles of the noncore subunits remain

Translation Initiation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae Mitochondria: Functional Interactions Among Mitochondrial Ribosomal Protein Rsm28p, Initiation Factor 2, Methionyl-tRNA-Formyltransferase and Novel Protein Rmd9p
Genetics
; ABSTRACT Rsm28p is a dispensable component of the mitochondrial ribosomal small subunit in Saccharomyces cerevisiae that is not related to known proteins found in bacteria. It was identified as a dominant suppressor of certain mitochondrial mutations that reduced translation of the COX2 mRNA. To

Mitochondria and frisbee?
Better Nutrition
; The incredible energy of growing things never ceases to amaze me, especially this time of year. The mind-boggling energy stored in seeds and in plants. The aromatic power of blooming herbs, trees, and flowers. A time of year when we can walk around outside in less than polar expedition gear.

Functional Characterization of the Arabidopsis Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factor 5A-2 That Plays a Crucial Role in Plant Growth and Development by Regulating Cell Division, Cell Growth, and Cell Death1[OA]
Plant Physiology
; The eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF-5A) is a highly conserved protein found in all eukaryotic organisms. Although originally identified as a translation initiation factor, recent studies in mammalian and yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) cells suggest that eIF-5A is mainly involved

Short on energy? Mitochondria may be getting old
The Topeka Capital-Journal
; By DR. EUGENE C. BOVEE Kansas Senior Press Service Maybe you read a recent newspaper article that said scientists are blaming aging on the wearing out of our "mitochondria." Are your mitochondria getting old? Or, maybe you don't know what in the dickens are mitochondria. Back in the late 1800s,
