While writing this article, a paraphrase of a quote by Martin Luther, which critiqued monasticism on two counts, was encountered. Luther felt that, first, the ascetic might begin to view the system in terms of prideful self-effort and merit and, second, that asceticism seemed inextricably linked to a Manichean denial of the material world.

The themes are somewhat linked. In the words of Paul Henry and Donald Swearer:

Paul had advised asceticism as a hedge against pride; Luther saw it having become a prime vehicle for the ultimate in human pride, the confidence that we can earn our way back ...
