In some ways, but there may be problems

WHETHER TWO-WIRE (120 volts) or three-wire (120/ 240), residential electric power circuits are normally single-phase. That's also true for most rural systems, even at much higher voltages. Yet a two-wire circuit ought to be cheaper to install than three wires. A logical conclusion is that three-phase power transmission and distribution is better suited to high-energy, high-density loads. But why? Part of the answer, of course, is that cost and efficiency dictate polyphase design for highhorsepower motors.
