I had read in Wittgenstein that the world is a multitude of factsall that the case is-and that talking about what isn't the case amounts to metaphysical mouth-flapping. On this point Wittgenstein was stern: "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent." Good advice, I suppose, except tha
t what the case is is seldom where the heart is. And those of us with facts in short supply would end up having to keep very quiet.
Like so many descendents of Eastern European Jews, I knew next to nothing about my family past. Emigration and assimilation had thinned it to flimsy speculation, too ...
