The author of this book should be well known to JETS readers from his previous publications, including a shorter commentary on Matthew in the IVP Commentary Series (InterVarsity, 1997). In the present volume he seeks to illumine the sociohistorical context of Matthew, although he acknowledges the value of other studies that stress redaction criticism, structuralism, history of interpretation, and narrative criticism.
