Some American Bishops' Letters to E. B. Pusey
|
Several years ago, I published an article in this journal based on letters from two American bishops-Doane of New Jersey and Whittingham of Maryland-to John Henry Newman and John Keble, leaders of the Oxford Movement in the Church of England.1 At the time, I was unaware of any similar letters to the third major leader of the movement, Edward Bouverie Pusey. However, in fall 1998 I had the honor of serving as acting priest-librarian and archivist of Pusey House, Oxford, where I was able to locate several such letters, mostly from Bishop Doane, but also from bishops Hopkins of Vermont, Potter ...
