INTRODUCTION
With a total land area of 147, 570 sq. km Bangladesh is characterised by high population (129.2 million; 2001 estimate), rapid population growth (1.76 per cent per annum since 1990), high population density (about 800 persons per sq. km or only 0.57 ha per head) and low per capita income US$ 386 per year.
