Major General William Crawford Gorgas, MC USA, played a major role in the construction of the Panama Canal. Without his knowledge of yellow fever and his efforts to control the mosquito populations, the Panama Canal might not have been constructed. The Gorgas Medal, in his honor, was established in 1942. The award is given to an individual for distinguished work in preventive medicine, clinical application, education or research. All nominees must be AMSUS members or eligible for membership.
