In December, U.S. Gulf Coast ethylene crackers were working at a rate that would produce 59 billion lbs of the chemical if that went on for a year. That's about 95% of the entire U.S. industry's capacity of 62 billion lbs per year. A major beneficiary of that output was ethane, the humble product of the nation's gas processing plants which is always the first liquid to be rejected back into the gas stream when ethylene demand slumps--none of that during December.
