'Smart" fiber optics look out for themselves

Rochester, N.Y.-A device smaller than an inchworm within a fiber-optic cable that clings to a single fiber can precisely measure how efficiently it's performing and eliminate the maze of wiring that carries communications lines, said researchers at the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester.
