Composition of type 347 austenitic stainless steel was modified with the addition of boron and cerium. An improvement of creep strength coupled with creep ductility of the steel was observed with boron and cerium additions. The observation of enhanced precipitation of carbonitrides in boron-containing steel over that of boron-free steel may in part contribute to the increase in creep strength. Both grain boundary sliding and nucleation and growth of intergranular creep cavities were found to ...

Grain Boundary Engineering of Ferritic-Martensitic Alloy T91
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; Ferritic-martensitic alloys such as T91 are proposed for applications in high-temperature, advanced nuclear reactor core materials applications where tolerance to radiation damage and retention of high-temperature strength and creep resistance are required. One strategy for improving creep

Transmission Electron Microscopy Study on the Grain Boundary Precipitation of an Fe-Ni-Mn Maraging Steel
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; Transmission electron microscopy was used to study grain boundary precipitation of an Fe-10Ni-7Mn (wt pct) maraging steel during isothermal aging at 753 K. Precipitation of a face-centered tetragonal (fct) θ-NiMn phase in association with solute-depleted precipitate free zone (PFZ) was found
Measurements of the Grain Boundary Energy and Anisotropy in Tin
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; The three-dimensional (3-D) geometry of the triple junction formed between two solid Sn-rich particles and a Pb-rich liquid matrix is used to measure the interfacial energy and its anisotropy for individual grain boundaries. The anisotropy is determined using a Cahn-Hoffman capillarity vector
Grain boundary cracking
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; A chronological summary is given of the various types of grain boundary fracture found in metals. In each case, there is an impurity that adsorbs at the new (fracture) surface being formed. For the case of Fe-P alloys, a quantitative argument can show that adsorption of phosphorous on the free
The Evolution of Wrought Age-Hardenable Superalloys
JOM ; The discovery of γ' hardening early in the 20th century needed a continuous evolution of a remarkable family of alloys, known as the superalloys. The sequence of their development will be traced in this article. The theories of alloying and hardening mechanisms will be discussed as each played

Grain boundary misorientation effects on creep and cracking in Ni-based alloys
JOM ; The effect of altered grain boundary character distributions on the creep and cracking behavior of polycrystalline Ni-16Cr-9Fe at 360C was studied by comparing the creep and intergranular cracking behavior of solution-annealed material containing mostly high-angle boundaries to material that was
Atomistic Simulations of the Effects of Segregated Elements on Grain-Boundary Fracture in Body-Centered-Cubic Fe
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; We studied the detailed fracture behavior of a Σ = 5 symmetrical-tilt grain boundary at low temperatures in Fe, using empirical interatomic potentials. For loadings just above the Griffith value, the crack propagates along the boundary for a distance of about 5 nm and then deflects toward the
