New Alzheimer's drug is first therapy to show efficacy in vascular dementia

A new 12-month study offers the first evidence suggesting that drug therapy may improve cognition and functioning in patients with dementia related to cerebrovascular disease.
The drug is galantamine hydrobromide (Reminyl), which was approved earlier this year for treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. The new study, presented at the XVII World Congress of Neurology in London this summer, assessed galantamine among patients with dementia as well as cerebrovascular disease.
