ONCE UPON A time, sailing ships journeyed to China and returned to American shores laden with the exotic wares of faraway lands. The tea, porcelain, textiles and paper carried by the vessels (sometimes with precious porcelain used as ballast), was earmarked for the gentry. By the early years of the 19th century, however, the rich and poor were joined by a growing middle class as eager as their more affluent neighbors to possess luxury goods from China.
