To the Editor: The addition of quinine to seltzer water to create tonic water probably dates from the days of the British Raj in India. The bitter flavor of quinine is appealing to some,' and quinine is consumed in tonic water, bitter lemon, and other beverages, either alone or mixed with an alcoholic drink.
