ECCE HOMO: How Semiotics Becomes What It Is

1. Introduction
Those of you who have read Nietzsche will recognize in the title of my talk an adaptation of the title of Nietzsche's marvelous last book Ecce Homo, written in 1888 and first published in 1908, in which he narrates his life as a parable for his philosophy. The phrase " ecce homo" was uttered by Pilate (John 19:5) to show the crowds that Jesus, whom he just had tortured, was anything else than a king or a god.
