Kitchener left an indelible mark on his generation, nd also on his country's history. Yet he is a controversial figure; as his great friend, Edward Stanley, Lord Derby said, `to many he was an enigma, and to some a sphinx'. It is symptomatic that, over eighty years after his death the famous 1914 recruiting poster, with Kitchener's face its main feature, should still be so clearly recalled. Regard him with admiration, or remember his failings, he remains a towering personality.
