This book can be characterized as a De Manian account of the reception of Sappho. Quoting one of De Man's essays on Wordsworth where he remarks that "death is a displaced name for a linguistic predicament," Prins states that "Sappho is another name for that displacement in nineteenth-century sentimental lyric" (p. 191).
