Oscar Straus had seen his international popularity as a purveyor of Viennese operetta fade after the success of Ein Walzertraum (1907) and (in its English rendition) The Chocolate Soldier (1908). He regained his reputation a little more than a decade later, after moving to Berlin and deciding to compose for the great star Fritzi Massary.
