The Bush-Cheney re-election campaign, while contending it was only following security guidelines, was criticized in August for asking an Arizona newspaper editor the race of a photographer who would be covering Vice President Dick Cheney's appearance in Tucson.

After Arizona Daily Star Managing Editor Terry Hayt refused to reveal that photographer Mamta Popat has Indian ancestry, Popat shot the event without incident.
