A genre-fried steak dinner with a side salad of existential dread, Collateral is Michael Mann's most commercial, crowd-pleasing picture. And working within the rigid guidelines of an audience-friendly Hollywood blockbuster seems to have goosed our preeminent poet of macho malaise into a higher gear.

Mann's smuggling into multiplexes his most thematically focused, balls-to-the-wall mini-epic since 1995's sprawling, kickass Heat (only this time with much louder gunshots! Awesome!).
