Background: Escherichia coli O157:H7, Vibrio cholcrae O1, and Salmonella Typhi are pathogenic bacteria that can be found in contaminated water supplies throughout the world. No currently available assays can simultaneously detect and identify all three pathogens. Our aim was to develop a rapid and reliable technique for simultaneous detection of these pathogens.
Methods: Four unique genes were chosen as the targets of detection. Forward and reverse primers were designed to specifically...

Occurrence of Salmonella typhi infection in Rourkela, Orissa
Indian Journal of Medical Research
; Between January 1996 and December 1998, the isolation race of Salmonella typhi in Rourkela was found to be on a steady rise. Of the 7866 samples (blood and bone marrow) tested, 988 were found positive for S. typhi giving an overall per cent positivity of 12.56. Enteric fever was found to occur

Sensitivity index of antimicrobial agents as a simple solution for multidrug resistance in Salmonella Typhi
Indian Journal of Medical Research
; Background & objectives: Multi drug-resistant (MDR) typhoid in India is an escalating problem. MDR isolates of Salmonella Typhi are on rise and are becoming a challenge for timely and appropriate treatment. Occurrence of per cent sensitive (%S), per cent resistant (%R) and per cent intermediate

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella typhi to quinolones & cephalosporins
Indian Journal of Medical Research
; Accepted May 14, 1998 Antimicrobial sensitivity testing was carried out for 85 isolates of S. typhi by disc diffusion and microbroth dilution for estimation of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The drugs used included amoxycillin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, gentamicin,

Approach to a patient with anemia
Indian Journal of Medical Sciences
; INTRODUCTION Anemia whether clinically overt or not, is a common condition encountered in practice in our country. In view of this, it is important not only to look for clinical evidence of anemia but also investigate for the presence of anemia, even if the patient has definite evidence of other

Current pattern in antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella Typhi isolates in Pondicherry
Indian Journal of Medical Research
; Typhoid fever continues to remain a health problem as the causative organism Salmonella Typhi has developed resistance to many of the antibiotics used. This study was undertaken to determine the current pattern of resistance to antimicrobial agents and pliage types of S.Typhi isolates obtained in a

Increasing minimum inhibitory concentration of cefazolin for Salmonella typhi
Indian Journal of Medical Research
; Cefazolin resistance was observed in the disc diffusion method of antibiotic susceptibility testing of Salmonella typhi strains isolated from January to June 1999. Eighty six multi drug resistant (MDR) isolates were studied. Of these, 46 (53.5%) were found resistant to cefazolin by the disc

Change in antimicrobial resistance pattern of Salmonella Typhi in central India
Indian Journal of Medical Research
; Background & objectives: Multidrug resistant Salmonella Typhi infections have been reported worldwide in the last decade. In a study from central India in 1991 multidrug resistant S. Typhi were reported to account for 91 per cent of patients of enteric fever. The present study was planned to
