Filamentous cyanobacteria are the main primary producers in biological desert sand crusts. The cells are exposed to extreme environmental conditions including temperature, light, and diurnal desiccation/rehydration cycles. We have studied the kinetics of activation of photosynthesis during rehydration of the cyanobacteria, primarily Microcoleus sp., within crust samples collected in the Negev desert, Israel. We also investigated their susceptibility to photoinhibition. Activation of the photo...

A Spatial Model of the Chromatophore Vesicles of Rhodobacter sphaeroides and the Position of the Cytochrome bc^sub 1^ Complex
Biophysical Journal ; ABSTRACT The photosynthetic apparatus of purple bacteria is generally considered a well-studied and understood system. However, recent atomic force microscopy images of flattened chromatophore vesicles from Rhodobacter sphaeroides restarted a debate about the stoichiometry and positions of the
Thylakoid-associated Polyamines Adjust the UV-B Sensitivity of the Photosynthetic Apparatus by Means of Light-harvesting Complex II Changes¶
Photochemistry and Photobiology ; Received 1 April 2004; accepted 7 September 2004 ABSTRACT The sensitivity of the photosynthetic apparatus to ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiation was studied in cultures of unicellular green alga Scenedesmus obliquus incubated in low light (low photosynthetically active radiation intensity [LL]) and
Role of the reversible xanthophyll cycle in the photosystem II damage and repair cycle in Dunaliella salina(1)
Plant Physiology ; The Dunaliella salina photosynthetic apparatus organization and function was investigated in wild type (WT) and a mutant (zeal) lacking all [betabeta]-epoxycarotenoids derived from zeaxanthin (Z). The zeal mutant lacked antheraxanthin, violaxanthin, and neoxanthin from its thylakoid membranes but

Light-harvesting energy-dissipating complex
Photochemistry and Photobiology ; Non-photochemical fluorescence quenching is a mechanism that protects the photosynthetic apparatus of plants against photooxidative damage during exposure to excessive light intensities. Instead of converting light energy into charge separation in the reaction center, the photosynthetic apparatus
Genome-Based Examination of Chlorophyll and Carotenoid Biosynthesis in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii1[w]
Plant Physiology ; The unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a particularly important model organism for the study of photosynthesis since this alga can grow heterotrophically, and mutants in photosynthesis are therefore conditional rather than lethal. The recently developed tools for genomic analyses
