I will start by presenting the main thesis of my book, World on Fire,1 illustrating that thesis with examples from specific countries, from Indonesia to Bolivia to Russia to Sierra Leone. 1 will then shift my attention to how the United States fits into the picture. I will conclude with some thoughts about the policy implications for international institutions and international lawyers.
