Giardia lamblia has been widely studied over the past several decades. It is now a confirmed pathogen. Giardia infects humans throughout the world, including people in arctic locations, as well as those in temperate and tropical climates (Meyer, 1990). It is the most frequently identified parasite in the United States and Britain. Isolation rates have been as high as 20% in certain areas (Yamada, Alpers, Owang, Powell, and Silverstein, 1995).
