Adolf Johann Friedrich von Baeyer was born in Berlin in 1835 and developed a fascination with chemistry at a very early age. By the age of 12 he had synthesized a new salt from copper and begun a lifelong research project into the oxidation process of indigo. After gaining a Ph.D. on arsenic compounds, he moved to Ghent and began research into uric acid. This work led him to the synthesis of malonylurea, a reaction of urea with malonic acid.
