In memoriam: Alan Hovhaness

Alan Hovhaness, an American composer of Scottish-Armenian descent, wrote music throughout his long life, and reached a grand total of 434 opuses. Doubtless many of his pieces are music for use in the very best sense of that phrase; but with a handful of scores he achieved a cult status that eluded all but a few other twentieth-century composers, many no less gifted with generous powers of self expression than himself.
