Abstract
Analysis of the interaction between mortality patterns and opportunity for natural selection could help to elucidate potential evolutionary implications of epidemic mortality. In this paper secular trends are studied in relation to Crow's index (I^sub t^) and its components of mortality (I^sub m^) and fertility (I^sub f^), using parish records for family reconstitution in a Basque population. A principal components analysis (91% of the variance accounted for) showed marked qua...

Natural detours.(natural selection does not follow straight route of evolutionary progress)
Discover
; IS NATURAL SELECTION THE PRIME mover behind evolution? Darwin's great insight into the mechanics of evolution was that a population of creatures always has a lot of variation - more feathers here, less fat there, more urge to kill there - and some of these variations allow the individuals bearing

The Independent on Sunday
; Everyone knows that the theory of evolution by natural selection was discovered in England, by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. In this book Marek Kohn goes on to show that the theory was preserved, nurtured and developed here when the rest of the world didn't want to know. Even Darwin, it
