We investigated interactions between photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation in the non-heterocystous marine cyanobacterium Trichodesmium IMS101 at the single-cell level by two-dimensional (imaging) microscopic measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics. Nitrogen fixation was closely associated with the appearance of cells with high basic fluorescence yield (F^sub 0^), termed bright cells. In cultures aerated with normal air, both nitrogen fixation and bright cells appeared in the middle ...

Molecular Basis for the Dynamic Strength of the Integrin a^sub 4^B^sub 1^/VCAM-1 Interaction
Biophysical Journal
; ABSTRACT Intercellular adhesion mediated by integrin ?^sub 4sub 1^ and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) plays a crucial role in both the rolling and firm attachment of leukocytes onto the vascular endothelium. Essential to the ?^sub 4sub 1^/VCAM-1 interaction is its mechanical strength

Development of Mo(Si,Al)^sub 2^-Base Oxidation-Resistant Coating on Nb-Base Structural Materials
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions
; Mo(Si,Al)^sub 2^-base oxidation-resistant coatings for Nb-base structural materials have been studied. The coating is composed of a Mo(Si, Al)^sub 2^-base Al reservoir and Al^sub 2^O^sub 3^ interlayer to suppress interface reactions between the Al reservoir and the substrate. To develop a suitable

Nitrogen fixation in an aerated stabilization basin treating bleached kraft mill wastewater
Water Environment Research
; ABSTRACT: Pulp and paper mill wastewaters normally contain very low concentrations of nitrogen, but many pulp mill aerated stabilization basin (ASB) treatment systems are operated with no supplemental nitrogen, while achieving high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD^sub 5^) removal. A nutrient
