IN the winter of 1763 Thomas Jefferson, age nineteen, at home at Shadwell from his studies at the College of William and Mary, lovesick and forlorn, compounded his heartache with an eye infection that kept him from reading Sir Edward Coke, the staple legal training of the day. Instead he spent his time map dreaming. On 20 January he wrote to his friend John Page of a grand European tour they would one day take. In the meantime, he imparted more local and immediate travel plans: "I have some thoughts of going to Petersburg if the actors go there in May."1
