I did not expect to read and learn about Asmara, Africa's secret modernist city. I just wanted to go there. I long to enjoy a drink in Crispi's Art Deco bar or take a dip in the swimming pool on Qohayto Street, where turquoise-painted slender concrete frames provide an airy structure that would be an exemplar for any municipal swimming pool.
