ABSTRACT

We employ 100-ns molecular dynamics simulations to study the influence of cholesterol on structural and dynamic properties of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine bilayers in the fluid phase. The effects of the cholesterol content on the bilayer structure are considered by varying the cholesterol concentration between 0 and 50%. We concentrate on the free area in the membrane and investigate quantities that are likely to be affected by changes in the free area and free volume proper...

Response to Comment by Almeida et al.: Free Area Theories for Lipid Bilayers-Predictive or Not?
Biophysical Journal ; ABSTRACT Free area theories for lateral diffusion in lipid bilayers are reviewed and discussed. It has been suggested by Almeida et al. that free area theories yield quantitative predictions for lateral diffusion coefficients of lipids. We investigate the plausibility of this suggestion by first
Ardekani - The Qeshm Free Area
APS Review Downstream Trends ; Qeshm Island enjoys a unique strategic location alongside the Strait of Hormuz, at the crossroads of the world's major shipping lanes serving five continents. At three times the size of Bahrain or Singapore, Qeshm Island is by far the largest island of our region. It straddles the heart of the
Lipid Diffusion, Free Area, and Molecular Dynamics Simulations
Biophysical Journal ; In a recent article in Biophysical Journal, Falck et al. (2004) present a molecular dynamics (MD) study of phosphatidylcholine (PC)/cholesterol (Chol) bilayers, focusing on the lipid packing and its relation to free area and lateral diffusion of lipids. A significant comparison is made between
From lanosterol to cholesterol: Structures evolution and differential effects on lipid bilayer
Biophysical Journal ; ABSTRACT Cholesterol is an important molecular component of the plasma membranes of mammalian cells. Its precursor in the sterol biosynthetic pathway, lanosterol, has been argued by Konrad Bloch (Bloch, K. 1965. Science. 150:19-28; 1983. CRC Crit. Rev. Biochem. 14:47-92; 1994. Blonds in Venetian
