There are three types of functional hypothalamic anicnorrhea: stress related anienorrhea, exercise-related amenorhhea and weight loss-related anienorrhea.

Hypothalamic anienorrhea is a functional disorder characterized by an altered gonadotropin-releasing hormone pulsatihty (GnRH), improper gonadotropins (FSH, LH) secretion and, in turn, altered ovarian steroidogenesis.
