ABSTRACT: Four laboratory-scale biological nitrification units (influent total Kjeldahl nitrogen [TKN] = 1002 to 1062 mg/L) were operated at chemical oxygen demand (COD)/TKN ratios of approximately 0.5, 1.0, 15, and 2.0 and at three different sludge ages of 30, 20, and 10 days to study the influence of COD/TKN, sludge age, COD loading, and TKN loading on nitrification and nitrifiers. Percent nitrification was found to increase with decreases in COD/TKN and increases in sludge age. The average...

Competition between Polyphosphate- and Glycogen-Accumulating Organisms in Enhanced-Biological-Phosphorus-Removal Systems: Effect of Temperature and Sludge Age
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: Temperature and sludge age were found to be important factors in determining the outcome of competition between polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen-accumulating non-polyphosphate organisms (GAOs) and the resultant stability of enhanced-biological-phosphorus removal
Radical solution in effluent treatment
PPI ; Despite the complexity of the chemical reactions involved, there are some simple rules to guide effective effluent treatment Large wastewater treatment plants are often considered to be the most environmentally sound in terms of emissions to the aquatic environment. But this is not necessarily true
[A.sup.2]/O technique for biological phosphorus removal.
Pollution Engineering ; The effects of dissolved oxygen Tcontents, N[O.sub.x]-N and activated sludge age on the phosphorus removal of anaerobic-anoic-oxic ([A.sup.2]/O) technology were recently put to the test at the No. 4 Wastewater Treatment Plant in Guilin, China. The [A.sup.2]/O biological nitrogen and phosphorus
The sludge solution: lime. (Environmental Waste Control Digest)
Public Works ; There is an economical and long-term solution for biosolids stabilization and pasteurization: lime. Lime stabilization and pasteurization are solids treatment methods used at large, fully integrated wastewater treatment facilities. Lime stabilization processes are simple to operate, maintain, and

PPI ; American Israeli Paper Mills benefits from pretreatment with an anaerobic reactor to improve its activated sludge plant performance AMERICAN ISRAELI PAPER MILLS (AIPM), in Hadera, Israel, produces different paper grades, such as tissue from deinked fibers, corrugated case materials from recycled
Long-Term Comparison of Trace Organics Removal Performances Between Conventional and Membrane Activated Sludge Processes
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: The removal of trace organic compounds through membrane bioreactors (MBR) compared with a conventional wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in a long-term study was investigated. Two MBR pilot plants were operated in parallel to a full-scale WWTP fed with the same municipal raw wastewater.
Principles in the design of single-sludge activated-sludge systems for biological removal of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus
Water Environment Research ; ABSTRACT: The function of the single-sludge activated-sludge system has expanded from chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal to include, progressively, nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal, all biological. With such complexity, design procedures based on fundamental behavioral
Just water down the drain?
InTech ; A case study of an Ann Arbor plant. There are several ways to treat municipal wastewater, but they all follow the same general principles. At the Ann Arbor wastewater treatment plant, several remote lift stations throughout the city help keep the wastewater flowing. Ultrasonic level detection
Study Helps Modify Industrial Effluent Treatment.
Pollution Engineering ; Wastewater treatment system design approaches vary depending on how much is known about the wastewater's characteristics, the complexity of the wastewater, the degree of treatment required to meet applicable discharge limits and the size and complexity of the project. When wastewater
